Welcome
Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS)
Mountain Warfare Training Center (MWTC)
The Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center (MCMWTC) is the Marine
Corps' premier training site for Marines preparing to serve in mountainous
regions with emphases in cold and high altitude confrontations.
This pivotal
training post was first established in 1951 as a Cold Weather Battalion
(CWB) with a primary mission of providing cold weather training for
replacement personnel bound for Korea. Due to the exceptional training
provided in support efforts for the Korean Conflict and subsequent
readiness, the CWB transitioned into the Marine Corps Cold Weather Training
Center. As a result of its expanded role it was renamed the Marine Corps
Mountain Warfare Training Center in 1963. MCMWTC operated on a full-time
basis until 1967 when in support of the Vietnam War remained in a state of
readiness, with reactivation to a full-time command on May 19th, 1976.
The MCMWTC occupies 46,000 acres of the Toiyabe National Forest under management of the U.S. Forest Service and affords prime opportunities to enjoy many outdoor recreational activities such as fishing, hiking, and camping. A letter of agreement between the Forest Service and the Marine Corps permits use of the area to train Marines in mountain and cold weather operations. The Center is cited at 6,762 feet, with elevations in the training areas ranging to just under 12,000 feet. The Center is situated near beautiful Lake Tahoe and there are approximately 100 camping areas within a 50-mile radius of the base. Camping and other equipment are available for permanent personnel and training units.
In addition to providing recreational gear for check out, Marine Corps
Community Services (MCCS) offers a modern fitness facility that includes a
large weight and cardiovascular room, two racquetball courts a basketball
court, a state-of-the-art indoor climbing wall, and a male and female locker
room with dry sauna.
Lincoln Military Housing (LMH) is located in Coleville and provides quality living for permanent personnel and their families. LMH features a Community Center that offers various youth activities, day camps, basketball/volleyball court and a fitness center. Also located in LMH is the Marine Corps Family Team Building program, Child Development Home and the New Parent Support program. At different times workshops are provided on a multitude of topics ranging from CPR to college art.
MCCS operates two retail stores aboard Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center. The Marine Corps Exchange (MCX) store located on base offers a wide selection of goods and services in support of the students and permanent personnel residing and training at the MWTC. The MCX also provides free check-cashing, Western Union and money order services. For convenience, the Coleville Country Store offers a variety of basic food, clothing, and recreational items in support of approximately 120 permanent personnel and their families living in LMH.
Marines stationed aboard the MCMWTC are also selected to participate in testing the latest in cold weather equipment and clothing, human performance, and rough terrain vehicles. Their assessments are leading the charge in developing Corps-wide doctrine and concepts to enhance our ability to fight and win in mountain and cold weather environments.
